The island of Borneo lies in the South China Sea and is predominantly covered by dense rainforest, supporting an abundance of plant and animal life. Borneo’s ancient rainforests have, in some cases, remained virtually unchanged for many millions of years. It is said that this part of the world may have been the home of the earliest form of man, with findings from caves in Sarawak suggesting that man was here 40,000 years ago.
If you’ve spent years’ dreaming of longboat trips, of jungle trails, of smoky longhouses and local dances, Sarawak is exactly what you’re looking for. Sarawak is a stunning mix of tribal customs and untouched nature. From the scattered valley farms of the Kelabit Highlands to the bird’s-nest trading communities of the Niah Caves and the nomadic jungle Penan have their place.
Day 1 Kuching
Take time to enjoy delightful Kuching city before heading out into the wilds of Borneo's Sarawak region.
Day 2 Bako National Park
Hike along pristine jungle trails in the Bako National Park. Look to the trees to try and spot the quirky proboscis monkeys who call Bako park home. If weather permits, embark on a night walk with one of the park rangers.
Day 3 Kuching
After an invigorating morning hike, farewell the jungle and head to Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary. Once back in Kuching, perhaps mosey down to the riverbank and watch tambang ferries glide by, or visit Sarawak Museum, one of the most popular attractions in Kuching.
Day 4 Iban Longhouse
Be welcomed in the longhouses of the Iban people and spend an evening learning about their amazing history and culture. Visit nearby waterfalls on a guided jungle walk, gain insights into the locals' day-to-day life and discover their fascinating headhunting history.
Day 5 Sibu
Hit the road and travel to the riverside town of Sibu. While here, soak up fantastic views from the seven-storey Chinese pagoda.
Days 6-8 Mulu National Park
Spend two days exploring Mulu National Park. Visit Deer Cave at sunset, go underground in Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave, which contains Asia's longest underground river, and climb to the summit of the Pinnacles Trail.
Day 9 Headhunters' Trail/Limbang
Walk part of the ominously named Headhunters Trail, historically used by warring parties that were travelling between the Limbang and Tutoh rivers. Head downriver to Medamit before transferring to Limbang.
Days 10-11 Kota Kinabalu
Kick back on the ferry ride to a beachside resort near Kota Kinabalu. Staying near the beach, yet close to the city, provides the perfect base from which to snorkel, swim or simply relax on Borneo's beautiful coast. It's the ideal way to end this Sarawak tour.
