Destination info

The most populous country in central America, Guatemala is a diverse and culturally rich place – a mix of colourful Mayan and colonial Spanish makes for a spectacular and lively nation.

Guatemala’s capital is Guatemala City, but for the tourist it is the colonial capital Antigua that holds sway over them. You’ll be in Antigua, only 40 minutes from the capital Guatemala City – a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by three huge volcanoes. One of them – Volcan de Fuego – is constantly active at a low level and can be seen to be smoking daily. Which is very bad for its health.

If you’re interested in varied natural habitats, you’ll love volunteering in Guatemala. The country boasts two major mountain ranges, lots of volcanoes and lowlands covered in lush rainforests, dotted with Mayan remains – including the famous Tikal, with its 60 metre high temples. The rainforest around Tikal is a protected area (Maya Biosphere Reserve) and is full of wildlife including jaguars, howler monkeys, toucans and ocelots and has been designated. Where Guatemala meets the Pacific, there are vast black sand beaches home to three different species of turtle.

It is very easy to see why Costa Rica is such a popular destination with travellers from all over the world. It has something to suit everyone, from the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Coast to the untouched rainforest that covers much of the country. With over 27% of the country being made up of protected habitats and national parks, this is a haven for nature lovers with its variety of landscapes, flora and fauna.

  • Location:

Day 1 Antigua
What better place to start the Way to San Jose adventure than in one of Guatemala's most compelling cities? Walk through cobblestone streets and past heavy wood-carved entrances on an orientation tour of Antigua. Cheap and tasty Guatemalan food can be found in busy markets and street stalls a block west of Parque Central.
Days 2-3 Copan
Travel across the wild Guatemalan countryside and cross the border into Copan. Tour the World Heritage-listed Mayan ruins, with intricately carved structures dating back to 500 AD, or sample some unusual Honduran cuisine.
Days 4-6 Roatan Island
The reward for a bus and ferry journey today is the pristine shores of Honduras' Roatan Islands. Spend two blissful days diving into the crystal waters of the Caribbean or simply melting into the white, powdery beaches under the shade of a coconut palm.
Day 7 Comayagua
Pack up the bucket and spade; it's time to travel south to Comayagua. Mingle with locals in the lush central gardens or visit some of Honduras's most impressive cathedrals.
Days 8-9 Granada
Cross the border and arrive at Nicaragua's oldest town. Granada city is a charming and surprising place, brimming with bubbly inhabitants and character. Sightseeing in Granada is plentiful; perhaps hop on a boat ride around Lake Nicaragua or for the adventurous, an excursion to Mombacho or Masaya Volcano National Park is a hot option. In the evenings, walk along narrow streets where locals chat to each other from their open-front living rooms.
Days 10-11 Ometepe Island
Spot the world's only freshwater sharks in Lake Nicaragua en route to the lush Ometepe Island. Take an optional hike to one of two towering volcanoes on the island or choose a slower pace at one of the beaches or jungle swimming holes.
Days 12-13 Monteverde
Costa Rica beckons across the border. Arrive in the eco-lovers paradise of Monteverde, and choose to explore the expansive Monteverde cloud forest on foot, mountain bike or on horse - or even go zip lining over the tree canopy.
Days 14-15 La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano National Park
From La Fortuna, discover the active Arenal Volcano - thrill seekers may want to explore after dark for exciting up close views of glowing lava. Perhaps enjoy a relaxing rendezvous at the La Fortuna hot springs or waterfalls.
Days 16-17 San Jose
Complete the Way to San Jose tour and farewell new friends in this spirited city. Join locals milling around Mercado Central for some super-cheap Costa Rican food and colourful souvenirs.
