Gap year Thailand
Thailand has long been a popular gap year destination, and for good reason. A wealth of history, accessible jungle, exceptional cuisine, rock-bottom prices and the timeless allure of sand, palm tree and azure sea all have something to do with it. The book (and later film) The Beach firmly fixed the paradise islands discovered by backpackers in the 70s in the popular imagination, but you can be sure Thailand has far more to offer.
Adventure travel Thailand
If you’re looking for adventure travel in Thailand, head north from the smoke and noise of Bangkok to Chiang Mai. From here you can head into the fabled Golden Triangle, with its bandit-country atmosphere, trek through jungle to ancient tribes, ride elephants and bamboo rafts. If you want to stay closer to the capital, you can trek from Kanchanaburi, just 130km away, too. Even on the islands, spread down the west coast and in the Gulf of Thailand, you’ll find thrills: diving with whale sharks as well as more modern motorised pleasures of jet skis or motorbike trails.
Student travel Thailand
Thailand is a student travel dream. They’ve been doing this for decades now, and they can provide, whatever your budget. It’s harder to find the budget beachside accommodation of legend, but it’s still good value and only gets better the further off the beaten track you go. And if you’re after more than R&R, Thailand has everything from cooking to architecture, history to art, as well as the more worldly pleasures of Bangkok, a centre of hedonism for over a century.
Volunteer work Thailand
Want to immerse yourself in the culture? Then try volunteer work when you’re in Thailand. You can teach English in orphanages or the villages, care for the elderly or children, work on much-needed building projects or animal conservation projects for turtles or elephants.
