Trip Summary

See full itinerary

Thailand is one of those countries that desperately need volunteers like you. You’ll find that teaching in Thailand is rewarding and much welcomed. With your level of education you’ll find that you can make an immediate impact in many places in Asia. You will be based just outside Sangklaburi, based in one of the childcare centres that provide a safe place for the children from working families. And why not go on our Thailand experience trip beforehand?

Please note: From October onwards the project will be based in Surin.

Thailand is just a beautiful country – outstanding natural gorgeousness, impressive architecture, eye-catching temples, lovely, friendly people and just the best Thai food you ever ate and a lot cheaper than over here.

You will be spending your time as a volunteer in Sangklaburi is in NW Thailand on the border with Myanmar (Burma). Sangklaburi is positioned on a 72 km long manmade lake fed by the numerous local rivers and waterfalls. The town is surrounded by mountains and creates a picturesque landscape, an idyllic location for travellers and volunteers.

  • Location: Sangklaburi, NW Thailand

This hands-on programme teaching in Thailand gives you the opportunity to make a direct and much-needed contribution in one of the poorer districts of the country.

We support a number of childcare centres – much needed in a country with low adult wages in which it’s common for parents to have to move to the cities to find work. You’ll be helping provide a valuable and essential service to families struggling to find a safe environment for their pre-school children.

The centres take around 50 kids each – up to 4 years old. If you’ve ever worked with small ones you’ll know how rewarding it can be. You’ll be doing everything for them – playing with them, wiping their noses, getting lunch ready. This is informal teaching and Thailand is one those countries where you can have an immediate effect. They’ll love you. You’ll love them.

It’s not just the children who need your help. The centres themselves are very often run-down and in need of renovating and repairing. So if you have any practical skills – painting, plumbing, just being able to fix stuff – you’ll find yourself in demand. It’s a great way to help and not just talk about it.

Please note: From October onwards the project will be based in Surin.

Your typical week will consist of volunteering Monday to Friday with a free weekend to relax or travel. On your work days you will be picked up from your accommodation around 8am and taken to the school. You will be returned to your accommodation at the end of each day, usually around 3-4pm. Our project coordinators will work alongside you throughout your day to answer any questions that you may have and to help you organise your day. All of our coordinators have experience helping our volunteer teachers to organise daily schedules and with lesson planning.

Not only do our volunteers do an amazing job looking after over 20 children and giving them a basic education each day at the child care centres, but you will also have the opportunity to get involved with renovation work during the afternoons. This renovation work is vital to help the centre to develop and make it as nice a place as possible for the children to be in. You'll find that this part of the project is just as rewarding as the work you do with the children.

This is what has been achieved at the project so far thanks to the help from our volunteers:

  • Perimeter wall built around childcare centre site
  • 2 playgrounds renovated
  • Drainage system built on childcare location
  • Roof mended on centre building
  • Provided a summer school program
  • Contributed and became involved in 2 ASEAN English speaking camps
  • 1 football tournament entered

What were the highlights of your trip?

The staff in Surin were fantastic, especially Tann, May and Deuan. theyreally looked after us in both the professional and personal/social aspects. They were so friendly and so helpful and made us feel so welcome. The volunteering was really good, really worthwhile doing, really sweet kids. I loved the time I had there. the Starfish team out in Surin were just fantastic I can't sing their praises enough. met some awesome people and made some friends for life!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Wrap food up really well, where you can, store it in the fridge, cos the ants get everywhere! Talcum powder really helps with the heat! Don't bother carrying bottles of things like shampoo etc. Save the space and buy the stuff when you're there, it's cheap enough.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Make sure you travel light. I thought i did but you tend to wear the same things over and over again and you can get your washing done for cheap. Anti- bacterial gel is a god send and strong deet if you are going to use get some which is stronger than 50%.
