Thailand is just a beautiful country – outstanding natural gorgeousness, impressive architecture, eye-catching temples, lovely, friendly people and just the best Thai food you ever ate and a lot cheaper than over here.
You will be spending your time as a volunteer in Sangklaburi is in NW Thailand on the border with Myanmar (Burma). Sangklaburi is positioned on a 72 km long manmade lake fed by the numerous local rivers and waterfalls. The town is surrounded by mountains and creates a picturesque landscape, an idyllic location for travellers and volunteers.
This hands-on programme teaching in Thailand gives you the opportunity to make a direct and much-needed contribution in one of the poorer districts of the country.
We support a number of childcare centres – much needed in a country with low adult wages in which it’s common for parents to have to move to the cities to find work. You’ll be helping provide a valuable and essential service to families struggling to find a safe environment for their pre-school children.
The centres take around 50 kids each – up to 4 years old. If you’ve ever worked with small ones you’ll know how rewarding it can be. You’ll be doing everything for them – playing with them, wiping their noses, getting lunch ready. This is informal teaching and Thailand is one those countries where you can have an immediate effect. They’ll love you. You’ll love them.
It’s not just the children who need your help. The centres themselves are very often run-down and in need of renovating and repairing. So if you have any practical skills – painting, plumbing, just being able to fix stuff – you’ll find yourself in demand. It’s a great way to help and not just talk about it.

Your typical week will consist of volunteering Monday to Friday with a free weekend to relax or travel. On your work days you will be picked up from your accommodation around 8am and taken to the school. You will be returned to your accommodation at the end of each day, usually around 3-4pm. Our project coordinators will work alongside you throughout your day to answer any questions that you may have and to help you organise your day. All of our coordinators have experience helping our volunteer teachers to organise daily schedules and with lesson planning.
To get a detailed PDF of information for this trip including full itinerary, country guides and travel advice on visas, money, insurance and the local weather, download our trip notes. By doing so you’ll also be kept updated on all the latest news, offers and stories on this particular trip. Happy reading!
Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health. Please be prepared that you may be working with volunteers of all ages.
You will be staying in a shared volunteer house in a twin share room with self catering facilities to prepare your own food. All volunteer houses have a basic kitchen including a hob, sink, toaster, kettle, fridge and utensils.
Eating out is incredibly cheap in Thailand, and you are able to walk to one of the many local restaurants where a meal can be purchased for as little as 100 baht.
On arrival at your project location your project coordinator will help you settle in to your accommodation before going for evening drinks on the famous Khao San Road. The following day you will be taken on a tour of Bangkok and the local area as well having a welcome meal so you can get to know your fellow volunteers. Your guide will also talk you through your volunteer schedule.
The following day you will be travelling to Sangkhlaburi in the north-west of the country, departing from Bangkok mid-morning. On arrival you will given time to settle in to your accommodation before having a second orientation about Sangkhlaburi.
In the morning of day 4 you will be able to experience Thai Culture as you visit one of the nearby temples where you will have the opportunity of giving alms to monks. This will be followed by a welcome ceremony at the temple where a blessing, bracelet and holy water will be given. Later on in the day you will begin your volunteer work.
All project staff work closely with volunteers and are always on hand to answer any questions that you may have.
Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.
You will be assigned a personal travel advisor who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.
In addition, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our staff at any time should you need to.
Groups sizes vary depending on the time of year, but generally you can expect to be with between 3 and 10 fellow travellers.
If you are on a tight budget you can get away with £80 Per week. If you want to do some travelling in your free time then you will need a bit more.
The majority of participants on this program are aged between 18-30, however it is popular with travelers of all ages.
The majority of our participants are solo travelers, so you will be one of many in the same position. We e-mail out a buddy list 2-3 weeks before you start, so you can begin to get to know one another beforehand.
Absolutely, and you have co-ordinators with you at all times to ensure your safety.
This trip requires a Police Check to be carried out - please contact us for further information on how to do this.
I've done this trip
Write reviewThe children were lovely at the childcare centre and I really felt appreciated! the in-country team worked really hard to keep us happy. There was always someone there for us to call and help sort stuff out. In one weekend they helped to sort out a visit to cambodia and elephant trekking! was amazing!
take a rain coat if you go in monsoon season, even though its still hot it will pour it down. be prepared to experience the true culture! enjoy every moment as you will have the thai blues when you return home!

Awesome experience, made friends for life, wanna go back now!
The staff in Surin were fantastic, especially Tann, May and Deuan. theyreally looked after us in both the professional and personal/social aspects. They were so friendly and so helpful and made us feel so welcome. The volunteering was really good, really worthwhile doing, really sweet kids. I loved the time I had there. the Starfish team out in Surin were just fantastic I can't sing their praises enough. met some awesome people and made some friends for life!
Wrap food up really well, where you can, store it in the fridge, cos the ants get everywhere! Talcum powder really helps with the heat! Don't bother carrying bottles of things like shampoo etc. Save the space and buy the stuff when you're there, it's cheap enough.

Make sure you travel light. I thought i did but you tend to wear the same things over and over again and you can get your washing done for cheap. Anti- bacterial gel is a god send and strong deet if you are going to use get some which is stronger than 50%.
