Destination info

The Kingdom of Thailand, with a population of 65 million people, is located in the heart of Southeast Asia and shares borders with Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty complemented by impressive architecture, including striking temples. The country is also well known for its appetising food and the people renowned for their friendly manner.

Bangkok is an interesting and mad introduction to Thailand. It is a city that has to be experience firsthand to truly understand it's unique diversity and has a mixture of the cosmopolitan cultural and downright random areas, all of which are a tuktuk ride away.

  • Location: Bangkok

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok
Today you'll be personally met on arrival at Bangkok airport by your friendly guide. They will take you to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive, you can relax or explore this exciting city. We will arrange a welcome party the following evening. This is a great opportunity to have fun, make friends with your fellow travellers and get to know the co-ordinators.

Overnight in Bangkok.

Day 2: Bangkok Tour
Meet the staff at the hotel lobby at around 9am to check out of your hostel and have a welcome chat and brief introduction of your experience. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow travellers and get those questions answered by our team. Once the talk has finished we set off to explore some of the great sites of bustling Bangkok.

Over the next few hours you’ll experience a canal boat trip (the best way to see how Bangkok ‘used’ to be), Wat Arun (the temple of the dawn), Wat Pho (famous for it’s huge reclining Buddha and traditional Thai Massage school) and finally The Grand Palace (Wat Phra Kaew). In amongst the temples you’ll also get to experience the sounds, sites and ‘fragrances’ of this great city and have the chance to pick up some snacks (fried insects anyone?). Entry to The Grand Palace is not included in the tour and costs around 500 baht. If you do not wish to go into the Palace there is a small market nearby selling all kinds of souvenirs and street food – you’ll soon get used to the fact that food is an obsession in Thailand!

After the Grand Palace you’ll then head back towards Khao San Road and your hotel, to either rest or go shopping in and around the Khao San area where almost anything is sold and at very reasonable prices.

In the evening it’s time for your first (!) big party. Your guide knows all the best spots in the area and will make sure you have a great night out on the world famous Khao San Road!

Overnight in Bangkok, breakfast included

Accommodation

Accommodation will vary during your programme as you will be staying in several different locations. In Bangkok your hotel room will be twin share with air conditioning and breakfast included on Khao San Road. Throughout the rest of the trip hotel rooms will be twin rooms (excluding Koh Samui) and equipped with a fan. In Koh Samui, you will be staying in dorm style rooms with cable TV, air-con and lockers.

Please be aware that whilst staying at the accommodation on Koh Phangan you will need to pay a 500THB room deposit on arrival which will be returned to you as long as the room has been left in a satisfactory state.

You will share a room with a member/other members of the group of the same sex. Depending on group dynamics, there may be occasions where you will share a triple room. Please remember to inform us if you want to share a room with your friend or partner, so we can try to ensure that you stay together throughout your trip.

Meals

Breakfasts are generally not included but can be purchased for as little as 50p.  Lunches and dinners are not included to allow you to enjoy eating out in local restaurants and bars and the opportunity to sample the local cuisine. Eating out is very cheap in Thailand, and can cost as little as 25 pence though an average meal may set you back between £1- £1.50.

Our team in Thailand will do all they can to help you with any food preferences/allergies but please note that Thailand doesn't seem to suffer from the same set of allergies/intolerances that we have in the West and therefore not all areas will be fully understood - either by our guides or by local restaurants. There is no reason that this should stop you travelling but we do need to ask that you are understanding of the local situation and please don't expect their either to be labelling (i.e. regarding nuts/gluten etc) or a real understanding of why this is an issue.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a 20KG luggage limit on all ferry services (and some coach services). If you go over this limit there will be a charge of 20 THB per kilo. We do not recommend taking anywhere near this much luggage though!

Advice & Safety

Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

You will be assigned a personal travel advisor who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.

In addition, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

Everything! This trip has it all, culture, beaches, beautiful scenery, fantastic food, parties (full moon was amazing) and our tour guide Jj was so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1. Don't be afraid to go alone, you will meet new people and have an amazing time! 2. Do any extra trips suggested by tour guides...things are fairly cheap here too so make the most of shopping / excursions / beach massage. 3. Try the traditional Thai food as it's lovely. (A sneaky extra tip) 4. If you can, book a few extra days/weeks at the end of the trip...you won't want to go home!

What were the highlights of your trip?

It was all pretty amazing to be honest but it was our tour guide JJ who made it complete! JJ was awesome guy who loved his country so he made sure we experience the REAL Thailand! We learned about the culture first hand and had such a laugh doing so. He never hindered what we wanted to do but always made sure we were safe. Thailand is an amazing country who I would recommend to anyone from all walks of life! Culture, food and activities were all perfect. I met some great people who I'm now proud to call my friends (including JJ) - I will be definitely keeping in touch with these guys who I shared an unforgettable experience with.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1. Don't worry if you're travelling alone - I would say it's the best way as your experience isn't restricted and you don't have to compromise on your experience. 2. Don't buy souvenirs straight away, hold off to the end of your tip or go to markets where you can get stuff for 1/4 of the price that you normally see. 3. Smile - it goes a long way :)

What were the highlights of your trip?

How to choose a highlight from such an amazing trip?! #1. Our tour guide; JJ. If you are lucky enough to be assigned JJ as your guide I can gunantee you will have the time of your life! He has a heart of gold and could not be more passionate about creating the ulitmate experience for you and your tour group. He is the reason for my high rating of Real Gap. #2. FOOD; the Thai food was unreal! It is so sad to see so many western food outlets popping up in Thailand, I'd suggest trying the small family run food options as they will give you the true taste. ( Our guide showed us the very best places) #3. Day trips; whilst on the Islands there are some options for day tripping- DO IT. Our best days were those spent in small boats, learning to cook and snorkeling.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

#1. GET JJ- if you have JJ as your guide you'll have the best time! #2. Be open to new things; don't give your nation a bad reputation. Be open minded and respectful of the culture. #3. Throw yourself in- who remembers that day you saved 20 quid when you stayed in. GO FOR IT and don't think too much!

What were the highlights of your trip?

The main highlight of the trip was definitely 100% the tour guide: JJ!!!!! What a fantastic guide, teaching us the Thai culture, sharing with us some of his favourite places, encouraging us to do things we wouldn't normally and fully embrace the experience, always trying to better himself as well and learn as much English as possible to make the trip even better for us lazy people who only speak English. Was so amazing to meet such a fun loving, genuine guy who really cares about his job. He was always explaining the history of Thailand to us, and nothing we asked was too much. Even on our free days he would advise what to do or ask us what we wanted to do and find out the best way to do it, ensuring we weren't getting ripped off for being tourists too. By the end of the trip he was a friend, not just a tour guide. If all the other tour guides are half as passionate and determined as JJ then real gap are on to some real winners. Another highlight was the food. I'm so so sad to be home and not eating delicious Thai!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1-travel light, you only wear half of what you take and are just carrying around loads of stuff for no reason. 2-mosquitos like you, take repellent 3-just say yes

What were the highlights of your trip?

There's were so many highlights! First of all the country of Thailand. Beautiful, peaceful and a different adventure everyday. Whether we were shopping in Bangkok or kiaking around the island of Koh Samui plus many many other activities and experiences that took place whilst we were there I loved every minute of it. Secondly learning about the culture and understanding the people of Thailand, there beliefs and how there everyday life seems to always a happy day. We met many different faces of the native Thai people and not one person was miserable or made you unhappy, which was so refreshing to experience. Finally the people who started off as strangers on day one of the trip and ended up as friends that I will never forget. The experience of traveling Thailand built strong bonds of friendship between us all. But I cannot finish without forgetting the two tour guides who made the experience amazing. Chai and Wit were professional, knowledgable and the friendliest guys I've ever met. Not only did the trip run so smooth and well, the guys would bend over backwards for you to make sure all of us were happy, I couldn't thank them both enough before we left. They are a credit to RealGap and to Thailand.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Tip number one is to not worry about traveling alone, you make so many friends out there and laugh everyday regardless of what your doing. The trip its self brings people together, so if making friends is not your strong point then don't worry because the adventure into Thailand brings you together with everyone. Tip number two would be to give everything a go out there. Some things on the trip to Thailand can only be done over there. Whether it be trying real Thai made food, a Thai foot massage or riding on the back of an Asian elephant, all of those things are unforgettable and something you can't do back home in the UK. Tip number three would just be to enjoy yourself out there. Thailand is a very long way from home and there may be sometimes you may feel homesick. But stick it in with the group of people that are experiencing everything in Thailand for the first time too and you will guaranteed make amazing friends and create memories you'll never forget.

What were the highlights of your trip?

There were so many highlights of my trip to Thailand. I enjoyed the elephant ride to zip wiring through the jungle! Total wipeout was amazing!! I also loved the canal boat ride through Bangkok it really was an experience into seeing how people live- it actually made me feel so lucky and appreciate my home so much more. I have met some amazing friends I hope to keep for life but I have to say what really stood out the most was the amazing service, professionalism, selflessness and fun the two tour guides provided us; wit and chai. They couldn't have done enough for us and they solely made it a once in a life time experience. Can't wait for my next adventure with real gap.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

- do not worry if you travel alone- you make so many friends you quickly create a strong bond with- I was so Worried but made friends for life - say yes to everything! Extra activities were extra cost and so a little bit unsure but we went for them anyway and they really are all worth it- never thought I would be doing a total wipeout course in Thailand - be open to try new things- this for me was especially the food- it is easier than you expect to eat English food when abroad as it is on many menus however be willing to try new things. I tried Thai food and it was amazing

What were the highlights of your trip?

I loved Bangkok and Khao San Road. The culture and hustle and bustle of city life was amazing. Plus its the first place you arrive and it's the first time you meet your group and guide ect, so It's all really exciting and new! Koh Tao was also really beautiful, make sure you do the Bar Crawl and enter the competitions, there are some amazing prices to be won including a fun scuba dive, I would recommend doing this on the island. The whole diving experience was outstanding and you see the most incredible things!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Take more money than you think you'll need, there's nothing worse than being on a budget and missing out on all the cool things to do. When trekking, take really comfy trainers and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty Don't be afraid of travelling alone, you meet the most amazing people and everyone is like a family.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Koh Tao Pub crawl was amazing! The first night going around bangkok in a rainstorm in a tuk tuk was an unexpected highlight. Snorkelling around Koh Tao though was the best experience. But most of all it was meeting the group and the guides!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Don't rent a moped on the islands. I did so and crashed giving me a £350 fine and 3 stitches in my mouth. Only afterwards did I find out that three other guys I met who had rented all crashed with similar fines. If its easier for you, take a suitcase. We barely moved our bags other taking them up hotel stairs or out of taxis so backpacks were not really needed. Get there early on the first day, while other people were still on planes flying in I had already been round Bangkok in a tuk tuk, watched a lady boy show and went shopping.

The highlights of my trip were certainly Koh Tao and Hua Hin. Koh Tao is a beautiful place and the time we spent there was very enjoyable.

Do not pack too much stuff. You only really need 3 pairs of shoes for the trip (I took far too many), make the most of the trip - it doesn't last long. Grab all opportunities with both hands as you may never get to experience such a beautiful place again.

Meeting the tour guide, who is now an amazing friend, so friendly and I loved that she helped me to learn some Thai language. She was very helpful and gave us lots of info about where we were and what we were seeing. Very well organised although probably too much drinking was done! The snorkelling trip was also amazing as we had a boat to ourselves - i was expecting to be in with a lot of other tourists, we had a small group too so we all got to know each other really well. I really enjoyed that we were in 3 completely different parts of Thailand and all travel and accomodation was included, very good value. This was our first package deal at the start of a backpacking trip around South East Asia and I feel by doing this first it has really helped us with the basic skills needed for the rest of our trip. An amazing time with an amazing tour guide/friend - Gift you are truly wonderful and I'm so glad you led the trip!
