Destination info

France... famous for baguettes, chateaux, onions, great wine, berets and stripy tops. The ideal destination for anyone who likes any of the above, but also a fantastic place to learn about European culture, teach English and... eat snails! This programme will take you off the beaten track to live with and teach English to typical French families in return for your room and board. You'll have plenty of free time to see for yourself why France is the number 1 tourist destination in the world and to learn a bit of French yourself in the company of fantasticaly friendly people. Bon voyage!

  • Location: Locations all over France

When your placement has been confirmed, it’ll be your responsibility to discuss with your host family what form the lessons will take - i.e. the number of formal lessons, dinner conversation, sharing activities with the children, playing games in English, etc. It is also important to agree a schedule so that everybody is clear about when you will be teaching and when it is your "time off".

You will help your host family with their English studies for up to 15 hours per week. Lessons can be as formal or relaxed as the family and you desire.

We suggest that you prepare teaching tools in advance using the many web resources available, as well as bringing a dictionary and a grammar book to refer to.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Just living with my allocated family. I was extremely lucky to be place with a lovely family, who made my stay easy.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1. Try not to have any expectations 2. Your trip if what you make it, if you put little effort in, it is likely you won't enjoy yourself as much as if you had. 3. Just enjoy the experience

Is there anything else you would have liked to have added to your itinerary?

It would have been nice if there was the option of having language lessons on the side, as although I was able to practise my French a little bit with the family, if I had the option of being able to take language lessons as well I would have.

Any other comments?

It Would Be Helpful To Have A List Of Expectations For Both The Person Living With The Family, As Well As A List For The Family - So That Both Sides Know Exactly What Is Expected Of Each Other.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Experiencing French culture, travelling round the region and seeing the sights, meeting some lovely people.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1. Take any opportunity that comes your way, then you'll have no regrets. 2. Knowing the language does help, even if it's just a few phrases. People appreciate that you are making an effort and that you don't just expect everyone to know English. 3. I keep a travel journal and I made a blog for my family and friends back home. I think it's good to record your trips so you can look back on them in the future. It's also a good idea to let everyone back home know how you are doing. Taking as many photos as possible is a good thing to do as well.
