Gap year Swaziland

Totally landlocked, nestling into the north-west corner of South Africa, Swaziland is often unfairly overlooked as a gap year destination because it’s so tiny by comparison with its big neighbours South Africa and Mozambique. But those who visit find a country with a very different history – it was a British protectorate and never experienced those countries’ disastrous racial divisions – and a gentle, traditional atmosphere, exemplified by its royal family.

Adventure travel Swaziland

There are certainly thrills to be had in Swaziland – white-water rafting through steep gorges and over rapids on the Usutu River, for example – but most of the adventure travel here is of the wilderness variety. Wildlife, of course, is a big draw here: black rhinos as well as elephant and antelope, hippo wallowing peacefully in rivers amid untouched landscape. You can also trek through the lush Ezulwini Valley, home of Swazi royalty, or the nearby Malkerns Valley, a centre for crafts.

Student travel Swaziland

Swaziland is more easygoing than many other African countries, and that’s something you’ll feel immediately as a student traveller, particularly in the towns, which are much less hectic and more immediately friendly. It’s great for backpacking too – with good transport and travel links, both inside the country and with South Africa and Mozambique.
