See full itinerary

Get involved with this exciting wildlife conservation programme on a real Big 5 reserve in a stunning part of South Africa; near Port Elizabeth on the world famous Garden Route.

As a South Africa wildlife volunteer, you'll be assisting in lots of different activities including game monitoring, game capture, as well as the possibility of caring for lions, elephants and even tigers in the sanctuary.*

In addition to this you'll also be playing your part in valuable conservation work to help remove and eliminate alien plant species from the area and replace them with indigenous species. The work is varied and you’ll be able to get involved in many different areas.

This programme provides a fantastic introduction to volunteering and life in South Africa!

Check out customer Nicky's experience on the Big 5 reserve over on the Real Gap blog!

* Please note that work with Lions and Tigers is not always guaranteed and will be at the discretion of our in-country team depending on the age and behaviour of the animals.

Destination info

Diverse, exhilarating, spectacular, varied – South Africa is a wildlife volunteer destination to write home about. Never far from the news, it’s a vast, modern multicultural country, full of contradictions and full of interest. It offers so many opportunities for student travel that it’s difficult to summarise.

There’s the country itself – offering everything from lush subtropics to deserts, savannah to scrubland, bushveld to stunning coastlines. If your taste is for Africa’s big five, this is the one of the very best places on the continent to see them.

Then there are the people and what they’ve achieved. If your interest lies in modern politics, South Africa should definitely be on your travel shortlist. You’ll have the chance to live and volunteer in a country that has accomplished so much in the years since apartheid was dismantled – it’s unique in the world.

  • Location: Near Port Elizabeth

First thing to say is that we’re dealing with wild animals on a big game reserve and they’re complete rubbish with deadlines and timetables. So it’s a bit difficult to be definite about when things are going to happen. But this is a rundown of what you can expect to see and to be doing. To get the best out of this brilliant hands-on experience, you have to be flexible and just go with the flow.

There are a large number of activities that you will be able to get involved in, the longer your stay at the programme the more you will be able to be involved in. Some of the main activities that you may be involved in during your time at the programme include:

Helping the land flourish
Of course, it’s important to look after the land if the animals are to thrive, so the project rehabilitates and develops the local environment. As a volunteer in South Africa, your involvement in this work will be welcomed. You’ll be helping with a whole range of maintenance activities including clearing bush, checking and repairing fences, rooting out alien species to preserve the natural balance, planting indigenous plant species, landscaping and all sorts of other essential jobs. You’ll learn a lot, in a practical way, about how animals and vegetation depend on each other in a natural eco-system.

Animal care
As a volunteer you’ll see between 15 and 20 lions in the sanctuary at any one time. If there are any cubs, you may have the opportunity to bottle feed and play with them – all depending on the time of year, their age and how their mum feels about it! The project rescues lions and releases them into game reserves when they’re ready. You can just imagine the huge feeling of satisfaction you’ll get if you’re lucky enough to be involved in that! In addition to the Lions, the sanctuary is also home to Tigers, if there are Tiger cubs there at the time of your visit then you may also be lucky enough to bottle feed and play with them too; this is also dependent on the age of the cubs along with other factors and is entirely at the discretion of the in-country team.

Elephants too
You’ll get up close and personal with these awesome animals. Feeding them, cleaning out their sleeping quarters, monitoring their behaviour, looking after their needs - all incredible experiences. Listen to what the guides have to say – they live day-in day-out with the elephants and know them as individuals very well. You’ll learn a lot about their behaviour which will help you understand what you’re seeing when you’re out on a game drive.

What should I expect?: 2-12 weeks

You’ll be volunteering in small groups with your own team leader throughout your placement and have the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of different activities on the reserve. Due to the diversity of the activities available it may not be possible to be involved in every single activity available, particularly if you are staying for just a couple of weeks, The longer your stay the more you will be involved in and more you will be able to experience.

It’s not all work! You’re in South Africa, so there’s sightseeing to be done and lots of fun to be had! You are just over one hour from Port Elizabeth and your weekends are your own. So you can arrange tours and weekend visits but if you prefer you can stay at the reserve and relax. Please note: if you choose to leave the reserve to visit other places at the weekend, you will not be accompanied by a coordinator and activities and meals will not be included.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Getting to fulfill a lifelong dream of travelling to South Africa, seeing animals (especially giraffes) in their natural habitat, meeting so many amazing people!! Volunteering for a worthwhile cause.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Interact with everyone! I met so many amazing people and getting to know their past experiences and getting to know people from all around the world was lovely. Make sure you have enough money according to your trip and what you want to do there. I would have liked to do some of the activities on offer but unfortunately i underestimated that there would be lots to do which meant spending money was an issue for me. Get involved with everything you possible can!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Skydiving was the main highlight of my trip, the men who ran the establishment were fantastic and made the whole event even more enjoyable. Riding and feeding the elephants was also personal highlight for me. Finally both the other volunteers and the staff were brilliant and made my trip even better.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1. Bring some extra money as activities such as skydiving, bungee jumping and shark diving all cost 2000R + 2. If you are visiting during the winter months, bring warm clothes - as I found it was very cold in the morning and night. 3. Bring nice clothes for the weekend, as I personally brought lots of scruffy clothes for the weekdays and then didn't have much to wear at the weekends in Port Elizabeth.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Feeding/playing with lion cubs, meeting everyone, the laid back atmosphere and attitude of the rangers, learning a lot, drive to watch the sun rise and night drive to see a crazy amount of stars.

If you pack nothing else, bring good walking boots. Make the absolute most of every second. It is over in a flash. Stay for at least 4 weeks. I stayed for only 2 and it was nowhere near long enough. Totally depressing coming home.

(Horse riding on the beach/ Bungee jumps etc) Feeding and playing with the two lion cubs. Even chopping down trees with the machetes was fun!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Seeing so much wildlife and meeting so many people! Going on dawn drives is amazing, take a good camera! I did the Game Ranger Internship before hand which was fantastic, I learnt so many things and got to conduct my own game drives during my two weeks volunteering!!!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Take warm clothes and waterproofs!! No matter what time of year you go it will get cold and the rain is unpredictable!!! Be prepared to work! Its not all playing with animals, you'll be doing some physical stuff and have some early starts. Enjoy every minute, even the harder stuff, it'll be over before you know it!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Everything. Little things like watching the sun set and seeing the stars so bright at night, then the big things; meeting amazing people, Playing with 2 lion cubs (until one of them tried to eat my arm) and seeing beautiful animals every day. But a massive highlight was the weekend excursions where we all went bungee jumping, sky diving, cage diving with great white sharks and just chilling different beaches! Absolutely amazing memories.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Pack warm clothes, no matter what you will need them! At the end of your stay at the game reserve, spend some time travelling!! Its the most beautiful country in the world, so go and see it! This was my biggest regret but I didn't book enough time of work. And thirdly, save up lots of money. You get a bit carried away on the weekends. But every Rand/penny is worth it

The rangers make you feel very welcome and they are so friendly and funny. Seeing the animals everyday was great but it was fantastic to be behind the scenes and actually be part of making a difference to the reserve and helping to assist in the future development. Seeing lion cubs that were two days old was also pretty special.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Bring layers. It can get very windy on the jeeps and the temperature drops significantly in the evenings. A few warmer jumpers are essential. Bring gloves. Very handy for all manner of activities! Be on time and get involved . . . The rest of the volunteers will appreciate it!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Hearing the lions roar from your bunk bed, heading out in the Land Rovers on the reserve everyday, chopping down trees, clearing an area for a new road, visiting the local school, cuddles from the two hand raised Meerkats, sunrise and sunsets, star gazing, weekends in Port Elizabeth, home made bread for breakfast every morning, sweeties from the tuck shop!, elephant sanctuary, meeting some amazing people and making memories, wilderness walk, the feeling of being 'cut-off' from the rest of the world for a month!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1) Don't expect that you'll spend your trip playing with and cuddling lion cubs etc- remember that this is a conservation trip so ideally, you want to have minimal contact with the animals and instead see them where they should be- roaming free and wild on the reserve! Do expect to work hard doing a lot of digging, chopping, fence building etc but to have a great laugh doing it all! 2) Waterproof jacket and trousers, cosy hat and plenty of layers are essential for this trip if you are there during Winter. Quite a few people didn't come so prepared and it definitely impacted their enjoyment of the work until they could get to Port Elizabeth to stock up! We had some really warm days but also some rain and thunder and lightening. The weather is unpredictable...pack as if you were going for a summer break in Scotland! 3) Expected the unexpected and go with the flow! If you go with an open mind and no expectations of what the experience will be like you will have an incredible time. Get booking!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Impala capture was a fantastic and exciting experience where 4 jeeps would speed across the African bush in order to catch impala for transfer to a different reserve. I also really enjoyed alien veg control which was basically tree cutting, because we got to use axes!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1) If you are travelling to South Africa during their winter remember to bring WARM clothes as many people had to buy scarves and hats in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. 2) The game reserve is very relaxed about whether you wake up in the morning for the early session, but it was always disappointing if people slept in because every second for me was worth all the money!! Throw yourself in to everything - don't be lazy or you will regret it! 3) I went for 3 weeks and it definitely wasn't enough! Book for at least a month :)

Looking after Nanuk the white lion cub for 3 cub sitting days in a row. The elephant sanctuary was probably my favourite experience of all, it was just awe inspiring seeing these creatures in the flesh, the sheer size and beauty of these animals captivates you. Also got to ride them twice! Didn't expect to do this but we actually visited a local school which was a unique experience to say the least. Really happy i got to do that, it's so surreal. Working out in the bush with the wild animals. Seeing the wild elephants interact with each other, truly fascinating. Coming within 2 metres of the legend that is Zulu (alpha male lion on the reserve). 7k run on the dirt track with one of the rangers and 2 friends, that was pretty epic. Skydiving twice. Bungee jumping. not forgetting the awesome people i met, genuinely really cool people. went at a time when there was about 20+ volunteers which was a lot of fun!

Research the weather before you go! I stupidly assumed it would be warm all the time and didn't bring any warm clothes - I got very cold in the evenings and early mornings! Be open minded about everything! Some people weren't impressed with the gardening and tree cutting activities, but even the hard work can be great fun if you let yourself enjoy it! What were the highlights of your trip?

It was a pleasure to get to know and work with the guides and rangers and to take the opportunity to learn a lot more about the environment and animals. Very much enjoyed the game drives but also the hard work of fencing and cutting down trees even in temperatures og 38 degrees. The trips to the local school were enlightening and it was brilliant to see such happy children even though they had no electricity in their school and not enough chairs and desks for all of them.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Take a warm hat even in the summer months as night and dawn game drives can be cold. Take the opportunity to try out all the work acitivities. Stock up with "goodies" in Port Elizabeth as the food is fairly basic!

It was a very gentle introduction to volunteering which is what I wanted when I booked. We were certainly very well looked after and very well fed by the lovely staff. However, at times I felt it was more like an 'activity' holiday (keeping us busy and entertained) rather than volunteering in the true sense of the word. You'll certainly have very memorable, amazing experiences which you wouldn't experience on a regular safari! The 'activities' were repetitive each week so many volunteers felt a few weeks were enough. The weekends were a welcomed change. I was apprehensive about leaving for the weekends but Im so glad I took the plunge! The staff at the Albiet Lodge were fabulous and really helped you find your way. I was travelling with my 17 year old daughter and felt safe and cared for the whole time we were in SA.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Game drives as you get to see the animals often, up close. Interacting with elephants. Increased confidence travelling. Exploring Port Elizabeth later. 2 weeks was enough for us so we explored Port Elizabeth. Did Addo elephant park, lion park and a township tour. People in SA are very friendly and helpful.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

The weather was very variable with lots of heavy rain. We forgot our rain coats! If it rains there's not much going on so perhaps take some entertainment. Do some research before you go, there's lots to do in Port Elizabeth so you might like to spend time there. We spent our third week at a hotel (BnB) in PE which was a pleasant base. Sharing accommodation with so many people (16 per dorm) was challenging at times. My 17 year old daughter coped fine, it was more difficult for me (40). Make use of the games room for time out and take ear plugs or music if you're easily distracted when you're trying to relax.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Really enjoyed the work aspect to the trip - sounds odd but my group got really into digging holes and repairing roads! Seeing the animals in the game reserve was amazing - we tracked the male lion most of one afternoon and followed him visually through the reserve! Visiting the elephant sanctuary was fantastic too! Seeing them up close in the reserve and being able to touch them.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Take decent work gloves - trust me they will be needed! It is very cold in August in the mornings and particularly the evenings so take lots of warm clothes - will get hotter in the middle of the day so take shorts and t-shirts too! Buy decent shoes/boots - they will get very dirty and well used but without them your feet will really suffer!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Being able to get really involved in a project that is clearly so important to the conservation and preservation of endangered animals is very satisfying. You really feel you've worked on something worthwhile. And getting to ride elephants and play with baby tigers is something of a treat!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1. Take warm clothes for travelling to Africa during our summer because it is their winter and it can be pretty cold! We had to go out and buy extra fleeces and hats at the weekend. 2. Get involved with EVERYTHING offered to you, because time flies and you want to make sure you do as much as possible 3. Enjoy yourself; there's something very rewarding about being part of the work being done, so just get involved and have a great time :)

What were the highlights of your trip?

The animals were definitely one of the main highlights of the trip - to be woken up by vervet monkeys on the roof and kept awake by the wild lions roaring at night is a pretty amazing experience! Everyone at the reserve was great, from the rangers who seemed to know absolutely everything about the wildlife to the other volunteers you go with. Living on the reserve was a total lifestyle change and the opportunity to handle wild animals and trek through the wilderness is something no one should miss out on.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Definitely get to know the country/area you're going to well before you leave - I felt like I hadn't packed enough of what I needed clothes-wise in South Africa, which could have easily been avoided if I had done more research. Secondly, staying healthy wherever you go is vital - making sure you're drinking enough bottled water, avoiding food which could be potentially harmful and keeping covered in the sun - sunburn and dehydration are so easy to get! Lastly, I would say take advantage of every opportunity you get wherever you are. You're not often going to get the chance to do the amazing activities or see the sites again any time soon, so don't miss out - get stuck in or you'll regret it when you get back home!

What were the highlights of your trip?

There are far too many highlights from a month to write here so I will try and summarise a couple! One of the projects we worked on was stable building. It was very rewarding to see the horses using the stable for food etc. It gives you a real buzz! Not only that but you know that your hard work as contributed! Another highlight was the predator interaction which was done almost on a day to day basis. Amazing feeling when you get to touch and play with the lion and tigers! Something I will never forget! Thank you! What ever projects are on the go you are always involved some involve more work that others but its rewarding. The game drives and amazing sites are awesome and everyone is really friendly.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

* Take warm clothes as on a game drive it can be quite windy and feel cold and a waterproof coat came in handy as well!! * Take plenty of toiletries and everything you need as you stay on the reserve all week. The main highlight was the other volunteers that I met, they were great and I made loads of new friends. The animals we worked with were obviously a major highlight. However, I really enjoyed doing the hands-on, physical work (despite not really being a hands-on sort of person)

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1- Be willing to get your hands dirty. Usually the harder the work was, the more fun we had doing it. 2- Don't be afraid to ask the co-ordinates questions about the reserve, the animals, the plants, etc., even if your question seems really stupid (those are the ones with the best answers). 3- WATCH OUT FOR SPIDERS!!!!!

What were the highlights of your trip?

The highlight was the project - and the people we were volunteering alongside and the co-ordinators! Everyone was welcoming, full of knowledge and made my 2 week experience an incredible one, and one that I will never forget. Although we had days with not so good food due to the in-house chef being away, it didn't spoil the trip as you were having too much fun! As well, the project really allows you to look at yourself as a person and gives you a real prospective on life!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Make the most out of every opportunity - you have to, nobody else will! Even if you are not up for the activity - give it a go - you'll gain more respect than if you just stand and moan! Take plenty of decent working gloves - we needed them!

This trip was absolutely amazing! This was my first time to South Africa and I loved it so much I ended up extending my trip! Bottle feeding the cubs, getting up close with the Lions and Tigers, Game capture and tree falling were all part of my highlights. The reserve treated you like family and all the volunteers got on exceptionally well. I would definitely go again...without any hesitation.
