Nepal is a country of superlatives. It’s in the Himalayas and the country has eight of the world’s 10 tallest mountains and 240 peaks over 20,000 feet. And, of course, it is home to Mount Everest, the highest point on earth (let’s give it its Nepalese name: Sagarmatha).
India is the second most populated country in the world, just behind China. Its slogan, ‘Unity in Diversity’ sums up the country rather well, and its citizens are deeply proud of this fact. All of the world’s major religions put in an appearance here, the best represented being Hindu (hence the many ‘sacred’ cows causing traffic jams in the capital, New Delhi!) as well as Muslims, Christians and Buddhists. The hustle and bustle is virtually constant, but there are always peaceful, spiritual spots that you can escape to easily. With a population of over 1.1 billion (2007 est.) it’s not really a surprise that it’s a bit noisy!
Days 1-2 Kathmandu
Arriving in Kathmandu, walk through a maze of bazaars, visit the 'Monkey Temple', join pilgrims at Boudhanath Stupa and see the burning ghats at Pashupatinath.
Days 3-5 Chitwan National Park
Explore the Chitwan National Park to experience some of Asia's best wildlife viewing. Enjoy a canoeing adventure on the Rapti River, before setting off on a guided tour of the park. Look out for rhinos, monkeys, deer and the infamous Nepalese wild chickens.
Day 6 Lumbini
The final stop in Nepal is the border town of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. Explore the ruins of Buddhist monasteries.
Day 7 Varanasi
The change of scenery from Nepal to India is immediate. Enter Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, and be greeted by holy cows ambling along the highway.
Day 8 River Ganges Boat Trip
What better way to experience the sacred River Ganges than by boat? Journey down the waterway and experience life on India's holy river. Enjoy a delicious meal before spending a night camping on the riverbank.
Days 9-10 Varanasi
One of the world's oldest living cities, Varanasi is a hive of religious life. Take in this ancient city on a walk through its maze of alleyways, shops and stalls. In the evening, witness an unforgettable candle flower ceremony by the river.
Days 11-12 Orchha
Explore the historical palaces and grand buildings that are untouched by modern life and lie scattered across the countryside of Orchha. Test culinary skills at a cooking demonstration and visit a unique papermaking plant.
Day 13 Agra
Visit the Red Fort, take a rickshaw tour and see the majestic Taj Mahal, one of the finest monuments ever constructed.
Days 14-15 Delhi
The adventure concludes in India's capital Delhi - alive with historical sites, museums, galleries and endless bazaars. The ruins of Qutb Minar, the Indira Gandhi Museum and Birla House are all worth visiting.
