Destination info

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world stretching across over 8.5 million sq km (3.2 million sq mi). It shares its borders with Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

From the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the plateaus in the Central Highlands, Brazil’s topography is quite diverse. The coast is made up of tropical beaches, lagoons, mangroves, dunes and coral reefs. At 6 million sq km (2.3 million sq mi), the Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world and covers over half of Brazil’s landmass. Originating in the Andes, the main channel of the Amazon River runs from west to east in the northern part of the country. There is little seismic or volcanic activity due to Brazil's position near the centre of the South American Plate.

  • Location: Rio de Janeiro

This project is located inside one of the moist scenic favelas in Rio and is situated on top of a mountain in Zona Sul. Today most of the houses in the Rocinha are made from concrete or brick and some of the houses are three and four stories tall and have basic sanitation, plumbing and electricity. It is still however one of the poorest area's of Rio and its occupants live in poverty. This project was founded by 3 women with backgrounds in design and art who started the project as an outreach project for some of the poorest street children of the favela. Their aim was to give the children an interest in art and to get them off the streets and show them that they can make a difference in their lives. Some of the art that is produced at the project is also sold on an occasional basis, providing income to the project.

The project is a fun and lively place to be with approximately 20 to 40 children who attend the project who are all enthusiastic to learn and get involved. The children are aged between 6 to 15 years and come from the poorest areas of the favela but you will find that the project is a great place to be with lots of energy!

Rio De Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and is nicknamed Cidade Maravihosa or ‘Marvellous City’ and it really lives up to its name! It is probably one of the most visited cities in the Southern hemisphere and is famous for its festivities and its main carnival which seems an endless display of beautiful and outrageous costumes followed by celebrations 24/7. Alongside this you have the amazing beaches including Copacabana beach, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer standing on top of Corcovado Mountain which is now one of the seven wonders of the world, the cable car of Sugarloaf mountain and one of the world`s largest football stadiums to name a few.

  • Location: Rio de Janeiro

The three women that founded the project are the only members of staff so you can imagine that they really rely on the help of the volunteers to ensure that the kids have a great time. This is a great way for you to be part of something special and work with some amazing children and people along the way.

You will be working at the project from 1pm until 9pm Monday to Friday with occasional Saturdays for special events. You can expect to assist with all art related projects from basic art projects to advanced art projects usually depending on the age group you are working with at the time. The project also likes to work with as many mediums as possible including rubbish items as an example so if you have a great imagination then it will definitely come in useful. You will also have an opportunity to create and develop your own art activities with the children making it as fun as possible.

As well as the art project there are also weekly groups that you can help to organise, set up and attend such as guest DJs who come in to teach the kids how to DJ, along with additional programmes that you can either assist with or take responsibility for in the areas of dance, music, film as well as English classes and computer classes. Any skills that you have will definitely be utilised on this project as this is a project where you can develop your own programme within the project.

Day 4 to Day 7: Time to get stuck in!
Now you know your way around you can really get to work! You can let your creative side loose on this project as you work with all aspects of art forms and from the drawing side to performing arts. The project also works with theatre, music and dance as well as cinematography and love volunteers who are enthusiastic and eager to get involved and are willing to give them the freedom to input their own ideas. The sky is the limit for the creative volunteer.

Day 8 and Day 9: The weekend is here!
You will be working occasional Saturdays but mostly the weekends are free to spend as you choose, so this is your chance to get out and explore all the sights, sounds, smells and tastes that Rio has to offer! Marvel at the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, top up your tan and watch the beautiful people go by on Copacabana beach, wander through the stalls of a hippy market or enjoy a caipirinha - Brazil`s national cocktail!

Following weeks
The following weeks will follow a similar pattern of working at the project and enjoying your free time. Time will fly by so make the most of every minute in this vibrant city!

Your last day
Having said your fond farewells to the children and staff at the project, taken your final photos and packed your bag full of souvenirs, you will make your own way back to the airport.
