Destination info

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world stretching across over 8.5 million sq km (3.2 million sq mi). It shares its borders with Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

From the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the plateaus in the Central Highlands, Brazil’s topography is quite diverse. The coast is made up of tropical beaches, lagoons, mangroves, dunes and coral reefs. At 6 million sq km (2.3 million sq mi), the Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world and covers over half of Brazil’s landmass. Originating in the Andes, the main channel of the Amazon River runs from west to east in the northern part of the country. There is little seismic or volcanic activity due to Brazil's position near the centre of the South American Plate.

This project was founded by a group of former professional and semi professional football players that found that football had made a huge impact on their lives. They wanted to reach out and help the disadvantaged children from the poor areas of the favelas and show them that there was more to life and to lead them into a healthier way of living by participating in sports. They also teach social responsibility and youth mentoring.

The project is a great place to be with approximately 120 children aged between 8 and 18 years old who are all raring to go. It is a well organised and structured project that aims to get them really involved in a healthier way of life and improve their football and sports skills. The kids train high above the favela on a pitch located next to the forest. The children come from some of the poor areas of the favela but you will find that they are enthusiastic and come prepared with lots of energy

Rio De Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and is nicknamed Cidade Maravihosa or ‘Marvellous City’ and it really lives up to its name! It is probably one of the most visited cities in the Southern hemisphere and is famous for its festivities and its main carnival which seems an endless display of beautiful and outrageous costumes followed by celebrations 24/7. Alongside this you have the amazing beaches including Copacabana beach, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer standing on top of Corcovado Mountain which is now one of the seven wonders of the world, the cable car of Sugarloaf mountain and one of the world`s largest football stadiums to name a few.

  • Location: Rio de Janeiro

On most occasions there are 3 members of staff to approximately 120 children per night so the help of the volunteers is greatly needed and appreciated. You will be assisting the staff and also working directly with the children. Based on numbers of staff you will usually find that while some children are playing while others are sitting out, with increased numbers of volunteers then more children can take part under the volunteers instructions. Sometimes you will be working with an entire group of children, a small group or one to one.

You will be working at the project from 8am-11am and 2pm-6pm Monday to Friday. You will assist the team in preparing and setting up for the session and also putting things away at the end. During the session you will be helping with strength training, physical conditioning, match strategies, ball handling skills and all things related to football. You could be working with the entire group, taking a small group on your own or working one to one. The project also has group activities on a weekly basis for the children that you could help get involved in and you also have the opportunity to participate in related projects such as Capoeira, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and boxing. With all this you are certain to have true Brazilian football experience.

Accommodation

During your stay in Rio you will either be accommodated in a volunteer house or hostel in the heart of the favelas. Where you stay depends on the length of your stay and the number of volunteers so you will find out when you arrive.

In the volunteer house you will occupy the top 3 floors of a building above an NGO and you'll share with some of their volunteers too. You will be in a room with 2 beds and have a male or female room-mate. You will have access to a private shower and toilet. You will share a communal rooftop kitchen that looks out on to the ocean. There is a covered area on the deck for eating and hanging out. The rooms are clean and comfortable with wifi. You are responsible for your own meals and for cleaning up after yourself. Towels, sheets and a pillow will be provided. Mosquito nets are not provided as they are not usually needed. The door to your room locks and there are also metal lockers for your valuables.

If you’re in the small friendly family-run hostel you’ll be sharing a room but there are only 12 beds in total. There is a rooftop deck and views. Rooms have AC, locking cupboards, 3 bathrooms, a large kitchen, free breakfast, wifi, and a common area.

Meals

Breakfast will be provided for you and will usually consist of fruit juice, breads, cheeses and coffee. Lunch and dinner can easily be bought locally or at the hostel, or even bought and cooked by yourself.

1. How much spending money will I need?

We recommend that you take around £70 per week.

2. Do I need to wear particular clothing?

You should take your sports kit and trainers with you for the sporting activities but other than that you should remember that you are also a role model and should therefore dress appropriately at other times. You should not wear revealing clothes, or t-shirts with slogans that may cause offence at other times on the project.

3. Do I need a visa to visit Brazil?

Most nationalities will get a 90 day visa on arrival for a fee.

4. Do I need to speak Portuguese?

Be prepared that very few people speak English in Rio. You don't have to be able to speak Portuguese to take part in the project, but if you can speak the language you will get more out of your time in Brazil. We would suggest adding some Portuguese lessons to your plans. We offer a 10-hour course over 5 days that you can take part in during your time at the project. For more details please ask one of our Travel Advisors.

5. Do I need to take a sleeping bag?

No. All locations have a basic pillow, pillow case and sheet.

Close

6. Is there a safety deposit box/safe?

In all of the locations there are places to lock your valuables away. Please make sure that you bring a padlock for the lockers.

7. How expensive is Rio?

Rio can be very expensive depending on where you are! You could end up paying £15 for a standard steak meal in the downtown area, but you might pay £5 in the favela. If you're planning to go out once you've finished you're volunteering, then allow extra money for this!

8. What's the common language in Rio?

Portuguese. 90% of locals won't speak any english, so it's worth learning some basic Portuguese before you go to help you out a bit!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Being with the kids at football. Was great getting to know them and making genuine friends.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

- You'll make friends straight away so don't hesitate about travelling alone. - Get stuck in, even if you don't speak Portuguese. - Try and learn Portuguese before, not for getting around, but for communicating with the kids, they will warm to you a lot more.

Is there anything else you would have liked to have added to your itinerary?

Brazilian Serie A football match, football coaching on the beach, hanggliding were all things I would have liked to have done out there.

Realgap Helped So Much Before Hand And I Can't Thank Them Enough. My Only Complaint Would Be The Lack Of Knowledge Of The Project On The Website And Of The Advisers. I Was Moved To A House In Vidigal Favela Rather Than Copa As Stated, And There Is VERY Little Coaching Football Involved, It Is 99.9% Playing With The Others. It Is Also Very Competitive Which Took Me By Surprise. It's Also Not On The Beach. We Also Didn't Get Transfer Back To The Airport, Incl Breakfast Or An Introduction To Rio When We Arrived. I Loved My Time And As With Everything In Rio, Everything Is So Relaxed And Not Set In Stone, That I Would Just Recommend These Changes To The Website To Let Future Volunteers Know. Thanks For All Your Help Guys

Only Thing I Would Say That You Need To Improve Is Make It Clear On The Website That Every Detail Acomadation, Volunteer Project, Airport Transfers Etc Aren't All Likely To Change From What You Originally Sign Up For .In The End Our In-country Coordinator Was The Most Helpful Person Did A Great Job Putting Us In A Project That Would Suit Us And Hostels. None The Less The Changes Made Were Some Of The Best Things About The Trip. So Grateful I Got Moved To Vidigal Rather Then Copa, And Also The Opportunity To Get Involved In A Variety Of Projects Was Great So Cant Complain.
