Trip Summary

See full itinerary

On this project you will be able to teach English to the people that really want to learn and work with adults and children alike from basic to advanced. If you enjoy teaching and like to be challenged then this is the project for you!

Set up by key members of the community who wanted to make improvements to the lives of people in the favelas whose hard work has now developed into programmes which mentor the youth of the area and provide education to all ages. These activities help to improve the opportunities for the community and provide assistance that isn't offered elsewhere.

Destination info

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world stretching across over 8.5 million sq km (3.2 million sq mi). It shares its borders with Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

From the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the plateaus in the Central Highlands, Brazil’s topography is quite diverse. The coast is made up of tropical beaches, lagoons, mangroves, dunes and coral reefs. At 6 million sq km (2.3 million sq mi), the Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world and covers over half of Brazil’s landmass. Originating in the Andes, the main channel of the Amazon River runs from west to east in the northern part of the country. There is little seismic or volcanic activity due to Brazil's position near the centre of the South American Plate.

  • Location: Rio de Janiero

We work with two projects that are linked into a joint partnership and are located in two different areas of the favela Rocinha, they have amazing views from the projects and are nestled deep in the communities. These two projects are the largest of their kind in the favela and offer programmes to both children and adults The projects were set up by activists of the community who wanted to do more for their community and fill in the gaps lacking from the government and aimed their projects at all ages. They have worked hard to provide programmes that mentor youth, advance the lives of the adults and to generally improve the overall life of the community. There are over 40 programmes that they have produced which include computer and English classes, dance, martial arts/sport, medical assistance, health promotion and social assistance, healthy cooking classes, table tennis, technical training and lots more.

The projects run from morning to night and cater for all people of the community, as you can imagine they are very popular with the community of the favela and are very busy. The aim of the projects is to advance the lives of the community and to make the community a better place to live.

Rio De Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and is nicknamed Cidade Maravihosa or ‘Marvellous City’ and it really lives up to its name! It is probably one of the most visited cities in the Southern hemisphere and is famous for its festivities and its main carnival which seems an endless display of beautiful and outrageous costumes followed by celebrations 24/7. Alongside this you have the amazing beaches including Copacabana beach, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer standing on top of Corcovado Mountain which is now one of the seven wonders of the world, the cable car of Sugarloaf mountain and one of the world`s largest football stadiums to name a few.

  • Location: Rio de Janeiro

The projects work on budgets that are next to nothing and really do rely on the help and support of the volunteers, without this then the projects would find it very difficult to exist.

The staff at the projects do not speak any English so you will not only be teaching English to the staff at the projects but to the adults and children of the favela community. If you have a second subject you can also teach that plus you can help with the other programmes on the project too. Due to the nature of the two projects there are various classes depending on the age and level of the students so there is a very varied timetable, as a result you could be working long days from 10am to 10pm or you could be working mornings and evenings about 6 hours per day, options will be presented to you when you arrive and you can work accordingly.

This project is suited to volunteers that have a desire to teach English as well as other subjects and if anyone has any teaching experience this would be better although this is not necessary, the desire to teach is the main thing.

You should arrange a flight to get you into Rio on your specified arrival date between the hours of 5am and 11pm.

Day 2: Free day
Today is a free day for you to recover from your long flight and is free for you to do as you wish. You can always visit Copacabana Beach and watch the world go by or get to know your surroundings, whatever you choose it is up to you.

Day 3: Orientation and introductions to your project
This morning is your orientation meeting where you will all get together where the team will cover important information such as what it`s going to be like at your project, dos and don`ts, fun things to do in Rio and how to stay safe on your trip. This is your prime opportunity to ask any burning questions that you haven't yet had answered and to meet your fellow volunteers!

After your meeting you will be shown the way to your project and introduced to the staff at the project who will be your day-to-day contacts, there will also be a member of the team with you who lives in the favela who will also help to show you around. You will spend the rest of your day learning the ropes and starting to get stuck into some volunteering.

Destination info

Rio De Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and is nicknamed Cidade Maravihosa or ‘Marvellous City’ and it really lives up to its name! It is probably one of the most visited cities in the Southern hemisphere and is famous for its festivities and its main carnival which seems an endless display of beautiful and outrageous costumes followed by celebrations 24/7. We would suggest adding some Portuguese lessons to your plans. We offer a 10-hour course over 5 days that you can take part in during your time at the project. 8. What's the common language in Rio?

90% of locals won't speak English, so it's always worth trying to brush up your Portuguese skills before you go. It's definitely worth looking into taking 10 hours of lessons so you know the basics- and we can help you sort that out!

What were the highlights of your trip?

The people I met; the caipirinhas I drank; seeing how genuinely the people in the favela appreciated my time and effort.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

I'd advise learning some Portuguese. I did 10 hours of lessons and the start of my 4 week project, which was well worth the money and gave me enough knowledge to teach basic English for that period. If I had to teach for longer I would have had more Portuguese lessons, because there is only so much English you can teach with a limited knowledge of the native language. Look after your possessions in Lapa - the pickpockets there are second to none. Some of the locals, particularly cab drivers, will try to rip you off whenever they can, so be alert and if you know Portuguese it'll again really help.
