Trip Summary

See full itinerary

Understand life in the favelas of Rio by looking after children and providing a lifeline to parents who need to go out to work. Why not include 10 hours of Portuguese language lessons during your first week of volunteering? Call us for more details!

On this project you will be amongst almost 100 beautiful small children as they all scramble for your love and attention, if you love children then this is definitely where you will want to be!

These children come from very poor families that cannot afford day care for their children without these centres. The majority of them work in the service industry earning just enough to provide food for their family, let alone childcare. By helping as a volunteer you are improving the care and attention for these kids as permanent staffing is limited.

Destination info

Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world stretching across over 8.5 million sq km (3.2 million sq mi). It shares its borders with Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

From the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the plateaus in the Central Highlands, Brazil’s topography is quite diverse. The coast is made up of tropical beaches, lagoons, mangroves, dunes and coral reefs. At 6 million sq km (2.3 million sq mi), the Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world and covers over half of Brazil’s landmass. Originating in the Andes, the main channel of the Amazon River runs from west to east in the northern part of the country. There is little seismic or volcanic activity due to Brazil's position near the centre of the South American Plate.

  • Location: Rio de Janiero

The projects that we work with are located in the most scenic of favelas in Rio located at the top of the mountain in Zona Sul. They work with the children of some of the poorest residents of the favela`s who are trying their hardest to scrape a living together. They are the people who do the jobs that no one else wants to do such as cleaning toilets in hotels, picking up rubbish off the streets and in most cases are single mothers with children. However as they are unable to pay for childcare these day centres provide an essential lifeline in providing a safe place for the children to go during the working day where they are looked after, fed, loved and educated. The mothers and parents can go out to work knowing that their precious children will be well looked after. Without these centres the parents would find it difficult to exist.

The day care centres are full of beautiful small children from the age of 2 to 9 years old all craving for your love and attention. There are usually a minimum of 80 children to just over a 100 children per day at these centres so you can expect it to be busy with plenty to do, the days will pass by in the blink of an eye. One of the projects that we work with have children aged from small babies to 12 years of age and have nearly 200 children.

Rio De Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and is nicknamed Cidade Maravihosa or ‘Marvellous City’ and it really lives up to its name! It is probably one of the most visited cities in the Southern hemisphere and is famous for its festivities and its main carnival which seems an endless display of beautiful and outrageous costumes followed by celebrations 24/7. Alongside this you have the amazing beaches including Copacabana beach, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer standing on top of Corcovado Mountain which is now one of the seven wonders of the world, the cable car of Sugarloaf mountain and one of the world`s largest football stadiums to name a few.

  • Location: Rio de Janeiro

The numbers of staff are limited at these centres and certainly insufficient to look after all the children so the help of volunteers is especially important. The centres provide an essential source of help to the poorest of the residents and demand is continually growing, without the help of volunteers this would not be able to continue.

You will be working Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm with your weekends free. As you can imagine with 100 plus children you will be kept more than busy! You will be helping the staff in all aspects of childcare including changing nappies, potty training, playing games, singing songs, preparing and serving meals, cleaning up after the children, settling them down for their afternoon nap, reading to the children, brushing teeth, teaching manners, not to mention the many hugs, cuddles, love and attention that they so crave. As the centres also provide a basic primary education you will be involved in some teaching and also programmes related to music, dance and also sports. We are sure that by the end of the day you will need a relaxing and early night!

Accommodation

During your stay in Rio you will either be accommodated in a volunteer house or hostel in the heart of the favelas. Where you stay depends on the length of your stay and the number of volunteers so you will find out when you arrive.

In the volunteer house you will occupy the top 3 floors of a building above an NGO and you'll share with some of their volunteers too. You will be in a room with 2 beds and have a male or female room-mate. You will have access to a private shower and toilet. You will share a communal rooftop kitchen that looks out on to the ocean. There is a covered area on the deck for eating and hanging out. The rooms are clean and comfortable with wifi. You are responsible for your own meals and for cleaning up after yourself. Towels, sheets and a pillow will be provided. Mosquito nets are not provided as they are not usually needed. The door to your room locks and there are also metal lockers for your valuables.

If you’re in the small friendly family-run hostel you’ll be sharing a room but there are only 12 beds in total. There is a rooftop deck and views. Rooms have AC, locking cupboards, 3 bathrooms, a large kitchen, free breakfast, wifi, and a common area.

FAQ

1. Do I need to speak Portuguese?

Be prepared that very few people speak English in Rio. You don't have to be able to speak Portuguese to take part in the project, but if you can speak the language you will get more out of your time in Brazil. We would suggest adding some Portuguese lessons to your plans. We offer a 10-hour course over 5 days that you can take part in during your time at the project. For more details please ask one of our Travel Advisors.

3. Is there a safety deposit box/safe?

In all locations there are places to keep your valuables. Please make sure that you take a lock with you.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Working and living in a favela was a fantastic experience. Volunteering was very worthwhile and we were made to feel part of something great with Scott driving the whole thing.

I Had A Fantastic Trip However It Got Off To A Bad Start As On My Arrival Things Were Very Different To How They Had Been Made Out On Your Website. I Was Under The Impression I'd Be Staying In Copa, A 10 Minute Walk From Project. I Also Wasn't Aware Until Speaking To Scott That Some Of The Money We Paid Goes Directly To The Charity Which Is A Great Selling Point Which NEEDS To Be Stated On Your Website. The Website Also Doesn't Explain That Your Volunteering Is Very Flexible. For Example You've Said The Hours Are 9-5 When None Of The Volunteers Do These Hours. People Who Are Only There For A Few Weeks Normally Do A Half Day And Those That Stay Longer Maybe Gradually Extend Their Hours. Once Again This Is A Selling Point As You Have More Time To Explore Rio. Your Website Also Doesn't Make It Clear That There's Also A Lot Of Flexibility In Terms Of The Type Of Volunteering You Do. You Can Easily Get Involved In Two Or Three Projects During Your Time And Yet This Isn't Explained. I Really Did Have A Fantastic Experience But To Begin With I Felt Anxious As Much Of The Information I Had Been Given Was Totally Wrong. Scott Was Fantastic Though!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing Was Too Much Trouble For Him And He Really Does Care About Making Everyone's Trip Perfect For Them.

What were the highlights of your trip?

EVERYTHING I had an amazing time. Before leaving everyone I spoke to on the phone were so helpful and friendly. My time in Rio was absolutely unforgettable, when I got to Rio I was actually offered many projects to choose from and given a tour of all of them so I could find the one that was best suited to me which was great. Thanks for everything. Can't wait to book my next trip!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Leave your iPhone at home! Get stuck in with your project. The more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. Try to pick up the basics of the language before you go.
