As a result of the poverty they live in, some of Hanoi’s population are unable to pay the minimal fees needed for public school, so families keep their children at home to help make a living. The children then turn to begging and collecting rubbish, usually earning a maximum of $2 per family, per day. Helping to teach English will enable the children to become more employable and earn a better income to support their families. The Youth House provides this opportunity to the children, free of charge.

Volunteer Role

You will be split into three teams and share the tasks of teaching, cleaning and cooking on a rotational basis.

When you are teaching, you will need to prepare lesson plans in advance. This is simple to do as your fellow volunteers and co-ordinators will be there to help you.

The children will start arriving from around 07:30/08:30, and teaching will take place from 09:00-11:00. You will then have a lunch break at the house, and teaching will resume around 14:00 until 16:00. If you have the energy you’re free to play with the kids during lunch.

For cleaning, it’s not so glamorous, but can be good fun! Together you’ll make sure the eating areas, classrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and volunteer rooms are kept clean and tidy. This will enable to children to play in a safe and hygienic environment as most live in houses without running water or a toilet.

Cooking involves making sure that the hungry volunteers are fed before 09:00 to enable them to teach the kids, then preparing lunch for the volunteers and 16 children. Your task will be finished once you’ve cooked dinner. Simple!

Most importantly, it is best to be flexible and willing to help with any tasks that need doing so that you and the children get the most out of your time in Vietnam.
