Volunteer Role
Patience and creativity are the most important skills to have for this programme. The children and their families may take time to warm to foreign volunteers at first, so you should be prepared to allow time for trust to develop between you.
In the mornings, you will have time to prepare activities to introduce to the children, then you will help at the hospital from approximately 14:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday. Ideas include colouring, drawing, teaching basic English and singing songs.
Plans have been granted to convert the hospital garden into a play area for the children. If the work is in progress during your stay, you’ll be able to offer your help (perfect for green-fingered volunteers!).
Occasionally there are festivals throughout the year where you can join in and perform songs.
Most importantly, it’s best to be flexible and willing to help with any tasks that need doing. Again, it’s very important to take the initiative, be prepared to work to a changing schedule and remember to do your best to help distract the children from their illnesses.
Please note: For stays of less than 4 weeks, you will focus more on entertaining the children and organising activities than teaching.
