Programme Details
Local people living in the poor communitites of Surin have very little or no access to alternative treatments such as therapy. Your care, skills and ability can really make a difference to some of the most vulnerable people in Thailand.
There are 4 different placements for you to choose from:
Student Nursing
Take the opportunity to enrol on a clinical placement and provide nursing care. This option is ideal for medical and nursing students wishing to complete an elective placement or student internship.
The range of nursing work is extensive. You will work in a number of walk in health clinics for rural people in and around Surin City. This option also includes an outreach programme and medical monitoring and health promotion at a childcare project in Surin. You will assist the qualified staff in all aspects of their work.
(Please note: This option is only subject to agreement from your educational institute).
General Medical
This option is great for those that want to get involved in a little bit of everything. The volunteer work will range from assisting medical staff in a hospital or rural community clinic, to working on an outreach programme, to helping with healthcare and promotion in schools and child care centres.
The outreach programme has now been expanded to include more rural villages. You will assess the health of the villagers, help with health promotion, treatment and advice, and take notes to assist future volunteers help these people.
Therapy
This option is perfect if you are a physical, respiratory, speech or occupational therapist or for recent graduates wishing to enhance their CV and help secure employment on your return home.
You can help the local people during your stay and help the local staff improve their skills and knowledge as well as the opportunity to experience and understand the health needs and problems or people living in rural Thailand. This option includes an outreach programme and rural community clinics.
Child Therapy
This option greatly needs the support of child care professionals. The local hospital in Surin has over 400 children registered at their Child Development Clinic. Some of the children are physically and mentally handicapped, others have physical disabilities, Down syndrome, Pervasive Deficit Disorder (PDD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).
The hospital runs two weekly clinics for these children. Approximately 20-30 children attend the clinics. The hospital is lacking resources, manpower and the latest knowledge/practices on how to help these children, and this is where your support is needed!
