Immerse yourself in a new and different culture in this stunning country. Help care for injured and sick elephants and also have the opportunity to get involved in local community development. Volunteers will experience the warm Sri Lankan hospitality whilst participating in a worthwhile and hands-on project.

The Volunteer Project

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to experience and immerse yourself in a different culture, as well as a way of thought which will make you learn more about yourself. Undoubtedly you will face the day-to-day frustrations and challenges that are Sri Lanka but overall you'll be greeted by the warm Sri Lankan smile and hospitality, and struck by the sheer beauty of your surroundings. You will have at least two days off a week depending on your workload, giving you ample opportunity to explore Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage.

Volunteer Role

There are three main components to the project:

  • Elephant conservation. This involves the daily care and management of the elephants including washing, feeding, cleaning elephant beds and treatment for sick elephants.
  • Community development and teaching English. Whilst many Sri Lankan can speak English in the local towns, in more remote villages English is not used for daily communication. English is an expensive commodity confined to affluent people. Low income groups cannot afford to pay for special tuition. The ability to communicate in English will greatly improve the local's opportunity to work and find better jobs.
  • Eco farming project. This project's aim is to develop an environmentally friendly onsite farm. This is an ongoing and evolving project that aims to be entirely self-sustainable in producing medicinal herbs and vitamin rich plants to supplement the elephant's diet as well as vegetables for human consumption.

Please note: This project accepts volunteers of all ages and it is likely there will be a wide age range of people on the project during your stay.
