Responsible Travel
Responsible travel or responsible tourism is one of those unclear terms that gets bandied around quite a lot by travel companies who don't actually practice what they are trying to preach. Whatever you want to call it- responsible travel, ecotourism, ethical travel and so on, here are Real Gap, we really do adhere to the principals of responsible travel and have been for the last 5 years - we are, in fact, the original provider of ethical travel/ responsible travel ideas.
So what does it mean? We've split it in 3 bite size headings to make the picture clearer:
- Environmentally Responsible Travel Programmes
Travel that, basically, minimises negative environmental impact and so makes positive contributions to conserving natural and human heritage, biodiversity and wilderness.
- Socially/ Culturally Responsible Travel Programmes
Travel that encourages authentic interaction and greater understanding between traveller and host whilst respecting cultures and traditions.
- Economically Responsible Travel Programmes
Travel that has fair financial benefits for the host community. So the money spent by travellers is used to benefit community projects, initiatives, training and remains within the community through the use of locally owned accommodation, services and staff.
Responsible travel is the responsibility of us travellers. As much as we at Real Gap can do to make sure our trips and projects follow the three key principles, ultimately it is down to you to make sure you are doing your bit. Just by following a few basic guidelines as you go, you can make sure your travels only make positive contributions to the world!
