The Kenya Community Outreach Programme is a shining example of a successful rural community upliftment project. The project aims to help those who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, disease, malnutrition and lack of food, unemployment, limited education and other issues that are faced by extremely disadvantaged communities in Africa.

Volunteer Role

The Kenya Community Outreach project has a goal: To target approximately 500 families in eight project areas over the next three years to provide vital assistance, particularly to the child-headed households and meet the immediate nutritional and living standards and conditions of these families.

Child-headed households are increasing dramatically, due to HIV and AIDS leaving children aged from 0-16 without parents to take care of them or their families of up to eight brothers and sisters. Many of these children are also ostracised and excluded from the local community due to the stigma associated with HIV and AIDS. Living conditions will thus deteriorate, as will their health, leaving behind malnourished and neglected children with no support or chance of a future.

By volunteering, you will help children, disadvanatged communities and marginalised groups of individuals, such as widows and street children build a better life and support themselves.

Some of the volunteer work you may be involved with:

  • Vocational training: You can help the youngsters by teaching them skills such as computer training, maths and English
  • Sexual Health Education: Take part in discussions and forums about western lifestyle, sexual health, AIDS awareness and other such topics
  • Mobile clinic: Attend to the sick, the elderly, orphans and other community members, or if you prefer you can undertake clerical duties relating to their care
  • Food security: You may provide support to impoverished families, demonstrating sustainable agricultural practices and improving food production and diet
  • Relief programme: Involves reaching out to poor families with food rations and clothing
  • Construction: There are all kinds of jobs to do depending on your skills, ranging from carrying building materials to hands-on building work
  • Counselling programme: You can visit people with AIDS, talk with them and offer them care and support.
  • Orphan Care: You will be providing vital love and support to these children and helping them to develop their education and be giving them the chance to experience a happier childhood.

A new vocational centre in town has just been built, which acts as a central base for volunteer activities and is just a few minutes walk from the accommodation. Volunteer work here includes; educating the students in IT, clothes making, building, agriculture and other vocational skills that are useful in the local area.
