Orientation
Participants will receive a detailed orientation to Israeli culture and full training for their volunteering role.
Full travel will be provided from your accommodation to the dig sites and back again. Volunteers will also receive a monthly bus pass enabling free travel all over Jerusalem.
Accommodation and Meals
Your accommodation will be based on single or twin-share bedrooms - this will normally be in a small family run guest house in the Talpiot area of Jerusalem, however this is dependant on the dig that you will be doing at the time. This is a great opportunity to meet volunteers from all over the world.
The guesthouse has a fully equipped kitchen and you will need to cook your own food. You will be given a food allowance to cover the cost of the food for the duration of the programme.
Free Time
You will be based in Jerusalem, one of the world's most diverse and culturally rich cities. There are numerous religious and historical sites and museums, to visit. There is also everything else you'd expect from a big city, such as shopping, recreation and nightlife. You are also just a 50-minute bus ride away from the metropolis and sandy beaches of Tel Aviv, which has an excellent nightlife. The project manager will be more than happy to help you plan how to make the most of your free time.
Please note: There may be restrictions (that can change at anytime) on where you can and cannot travel within Israel during your programme.
Project Support
Throughout your time on the project you will have the support and guidance of your team leader. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your project.
In addition you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
Project Age Limit
Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants health.
Programme Requirements
Due to the nature of archeaological digs, this programme does require some physical activity including digging and lifting and can be intensive and physically demanding at times. Participants should be in good health and inform Real Gap of any existing medical conditions.
Although no previous experience in archaeology is required, the programme is recommended only for those with a genuine interest in experiencing work on a real archaeological excavation.
